Student Letter Writing Campaign

A student letter writing campaign is where students send letters or postcards to their legislator expressing their love and excitement for their private school.

Letters, postcards and artwork from private school students are important because they remind elected leaders of the realities, both awesome and challenging, that private schools face. Letters can help paint a picture of the critical role of private schools in Missouri k-12 education.

A student letter writing project combines important civic lessons students need with real-time and real-world advocacy experience. The project is a great addition to any civics or government class and can be tailored to make it age-appropriate for any grade students.

Parents and the broader school community are encouraged to support and participate in this project.

Step-by-Step guide:

  1. Select a group/class of students to participate.

  2. After a conversation about the project, allow students to select a topic or you might select one for them.

  3. Look up both the State Representative and State Senator for each child or direct them in doing it themselves. Legislators can be found here:

  4. Students draft their letters. This can be done individually or in small groups for editing and feedback purposes.

  5. Students write or type their final letter. Depending on the grade level, this can also be a lesson in writing and formatting formal letters.

  6. Assist students, as needed in addressing the letters/postcards.

Follow up activities:
  1. Host a legislative breakfast at your school with your elected leaders as special guests.

  2. Invite your legislator for a “celebrity” read-aloud story time for a class.

  3. Plan a trip to Jefferson City to meet your elected leaders.

Example themes for student letters:
  • Why I love my private school.

  • My favorite teacher.

  • My favorite subject in school.

  • I attend my private school on scholarship/receive financial assistance.

  • I’m thankful to have a choice/options.

  • My parents work hard to afford my tuition.

  • What makes my school special.
